Crash Into Dave Matthews, Monterey County "Winemaker"
November 16, 2012
Dave Matthews may have been born in South Africa, made his name in Charlottesville, Virg., dropped anchor in Seattle and taken more stages than any other artist in the '00s, but when he goes to make a Chardonnay, he comes here—as he will this weekend.
The Weekly has learned he's working on bottling a Chard with South County's very own Estancia. There's also a nationally distributed Cab and a "Crush" red blend in the works. Estancia's powerful parent wine company, Constellation, which I profiled last week with a "Gonzo Grapes" column, has the juice to get the wines all over the place.
This weekend, in fact, he'll be on the Peninsula filming and photographing promotional images for the line of wines, which is called The Dreaming Tree, though Constellation would prefer to keep things quiet ("Dave's a low-key guy," says one rep").
Steve Reeder is his pony-tailed Sonoma-sown winemaker (you can watch them blend the Chard on the DT website).
"This is something I feel good about inviting someone over to share with me," Matthews says on the DT website. "It's something to be proud of."
"A great winemaker is someone who loves community," Reeder adds. "That parallel between what he does with music and what we do with wine is amazing."
"I make wines for people to drink," he adds. "Not to put in cellars."
A secret inside source says Matthews will be in the P.G. area at Point Pinos Lighthouse in the morning tomorrow (Nov. 17) and later at the Wharf Two/Del Monte Beach/Adventures by the Sea area come 2-6pm-ish for a bonfire and a clambake.
Like Matthews sings in "Water into wine":
"I will bring you water, if you will bring me wine.../ Oh we could live forever until the end of time./ Oh you will bring me wine."
