Avocado Versus Almonds Versus Artichoke Death Match

There are few things in life that are better than a nice handful of roasted California almonds.

Maybe a nice slice of sourdough garlic bread.

Maybe a grilled artichoke.

Or fresh cracked crab.

Or a glass of Santa Lucia Pinot or Napa Cab.

Thank Jerry Brown’s moonstones we don’t have to pick between these jewels—these almonds, artichokes, avocado, sourdough bread, crab and wine grapes.

At least when we eat.

On Monday, the state’s residents had to choose between them for its official state food.

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsome actually invited Californians to collaborate with KGO Radio to pick a winner.

Now, I admitted an artichoke obsession in sharing some standout local reader recipes last spring with “Artichoke Fetishes and the Insane Recipes That Come With Them” after discussing arty obsession in length with “’Choke Artists: Wildly creative home artichoke recipes – from chips to cakes – and a peek at the passion behind them."

But my brother grows almonds in California’s Central Valley and when I go on the Lemonade Diet-Master Cleanse it's sourdough bread that greets me in my dreams. And my favorite thing about Monterey County—though I don't think they qualify so much as food—is its wine.

But c’mon: Avocados a super food that makes everything better, after all, and are the common ingredient in California rolls, California omelets and California chicken sandwiches.

Find out who won the state title, and make your case for Monterey County's official food on the Weekly Facebook to win a Rosine's gift certificate.

I mean, what about abalone? Or lettuce? Or salmon?
