Is/Is is Where it's At

The other day, I got a piece of mail with a Saint Paul, Minnesota return address. Inside was a four-track EP by an all-girl trio, Is/Is.
Also enclosed was a brief press release likening the gals to Mazzy Star. I've never been too much of a Mazzy Star fan but I put the CD on anyway and ended up digging it more than I have ever dug Mazzy. It's a little emo, a little shoegazer, melodic, fuzzy and lusciously fierce.
The lineup consists of Sarah Rose on guitar and vocals, Sarah Nienaber on bass and Mara Appel on drums. I don't think any of them ever smile but who really cares? Check out their recent video below and be sure to check them out on March 9 at Jose's Underground.
