Straight From the Garage

Good music begins in the garage. I don't know why, maybe it has something to do with all the leftover car fumes. The Foundation for Performing Arts Center in Pacific Grove recognizes this phenomenon and is sponsoring a new music event aimed at these young bundles of talent.

On Saturday, May 7, the Battle of the High School Bands and Soloist Competition will be the perfect opportunity for Monterey Peninsula High School students to get out of their parents' garages and into the spotlight. “Every high school has at least a couple of garage bands just waiting for their chance to break out, and we hope to publicly give them that opportunity,” said FPAC director Lindsay Munoz. Soloists will sing 2 songs for the judges accompanied by prerecorded music.

The prize breakdown: Band category: 1st place $500 2nd place $250 3rd place $150

Soloist category: 1st place $150 2nd place $75 3rd place $50 The first place finishers in each category also get two hours of studio time.

“We have this beautiful performing arts center in Pacific Grove, with a great stage, sound system and seating; and we felt we wanted to showcase local talent,” said FPAC director Dixie Layne.

More info is available at www.performingartscenterpg.org or 647-1641.

The deadline for entering has been extended through April 8th.
