R.I.P Ms. Etta James
January 20, 2012
One of my favorite things about Etta James—aside from her mountain-moving voice and dynamic presence—was: she loved getting a little raunchy and never cared what anyone thought.
When I saw the recently-deceased Rock and Roll Hall of Famer perform at the Golden State Theatre back in 2007, she frequently gestured to the sellout audience with her tongue...and even gave a few extra-long booty shakes. But like night becoming day, the legendary blues vocalist was able to transition with ease from a sexually-laced tune like "I Just Want to Make Love to You" to the sentimental, and most popular wedding song of all-time, "At Last."
73 years old was way too young to lose a national treasure like James but at least she gave us a lot while she was around.
