Three Nights of Must-See Music...For Free

The Hay Dudes land in Big Sur Friday, June 8 for a night of string-fueled bluegrass romping and stomping at Fernwood. Each member of the all-star quartet comes armed with a credible resume packed with decades of finger-picking.
Kenny Blackwell (mandolin and guitar) performs with the roots-Americana outfit Little Black Train and plays mandolin with Herb Pedersen's Laurel Canyon Ramblers, Mike Mullins (guitar and mandolin) has been with the Cache Valley Drifters since 1993 and was a founding member of the now disbanded Acousticats, Paul Shelasky (fiddle) was named California Fiddle Champion both in 1975 and 1981 and has played with everyone from David Grisman to Laurie Lewis and Wally Barnick (bass) is the founding member of Big Sur's beloved Songs That Hotbox Harry Taught Us and is also a longtime member of the Cache Valley Drifters.
The following week, a sweet double bill makes its way to the Running Iron in Carmel Valley on June 15. East L.A.'s CB Brand (pictured above)—dubbed the "Loch Ness Monster of Country Outfits"—is described by Henry Miller Library's Mike Scutari (who will join the band on drums) as a "mix of country and rock, with Gram Parsons and Merle Haggard-esque originals, mixed in with blistering covers, including Waylon Jennings, CCR and more."
Also performing Bell Gardens, brings what the LA Weekly calls, "gorgeous, rapturous pop balladry with candy-coated Beach Boys falsettos and pre-afro-Phil Spector production. It’s weightless with gravitas."
CB Brand and Bell Gardens will make its way down the coast to Fernwood for another show the following night on June 16. Cowboy boots and whiskey money are optional.
