Monterey Muni Beach and Spanish Bay's Bacterial Bombardment

High levels of indicator bacteria were present in samples taken from Monterey Municipal Beach and Spanish Bay on April 18 resulting in advisories for both areas until bacteria revert to safe levels for recreational contact.

Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations establishes guidelines for the level of bacteria that can be present without inherent harm to the public. If the levels rise above what is deemed safe by state guidelines, a beach is posted with an advisory.

Bacteria in the water results from storm drains, marine life and human activity. Contact with high levels of bacteria can cause illness.
