Armenta Supporters Speak Out Against Recall

Two weeks after Alisal Union School District Board President Jose Castaneda called for a petition to recall County Supervisor Fernando Armenta, more than twenty supporters spoke on Armenta's behalf at the County Board of Supervisors meeting April 26.
Union leaders appeared en masse to voice support for Armenta, whose district includes most of urban Salinas, representing the construction, engineering, masonry, and electrician trades as well as hospitality and law enforcement.
"I’ve been sent to thank Supervisor Armenta for his open door policy, his support and willingness to be there for working families in the district," said Steve Harris, representing the 152 local members of the Operating Engineers Local 3 union. He called for "less baloney" in the discussion raised by Armenta's opponents, who site a year-old letter the supervisor submitted to the state board of education calling for state intervention in the Alisal Union School District.
Armenta has been the supervisor for District 1 supervisor for nearly 11 years, and served for nearly 10 years prior as a Salinas city council member. It's too late for a recall to make the ballot this June, but organizers could still gather the necessary signatures for the November election.
Armenta maintains it's pure politics motivating Castenada and his supporters. "What led these folkds to come here and ask me to resign and threaten a recall is political," Armenta says.
