Bomb Squad Search on Cannery Row Yields Cuban Cigars

Investigators from Monterey and Salinas swooped in to The Clement Monterey on Friday after hotel staff called in a suspicious, unmarked package wrapped in manila paper. Now, they can kick back for the weekend with Cuban cigars, which turned out to be the contents of the package.

"We thought, better safe than sorry," says general manager John Turner. "It looked a little suspicious." This is the first time hotel staff has called in the police to check out a package.

Turner's happy the hotel and guests are safe and no evacuation was required, but a little despondent about the fate of the cigars, which the police will keep as evidence. He's not sure what the "very nice" cigars were worth, but "probably a lot," he says.
