Marina Skaters Grind to a National Title
August 8, 2011
After two and a half years of practice and hard work the City of Marina/On the Beach/Drawn Skate Team showed up in San Diego with more than a few tricks up their sleeve and came away as 2011 State Games of America National Junior Olympic Skateboarding Champions.
The sixteen skater team is made up of 12 and under, 13-15, and a 16-year-old and up classes.
The Marina team won the 2010 California Junior Olympic Gold Medal State Championships which led to their qualification in the national event held this past Saturday, August 6.
The On the Beach boys took home first place honors in two of the three sponsored age brackets with Connor Kepp winning the 12 and under and Shane Sullivan taking top spot in the 13-15s. Just missing out on gold and a clean sweep, Sterlin Fitzgerald settled for second in the 16 and Over category.
A welcome home reception is scheduled for Tuesday, August 9 at 6:30pm at the Marina Teen Center. After defending California’s skateboarding heritage proudly against skaters from all over the country, it is certain there are a few future pros among them.
