Steinbeck Center Scores Six-Figure Grant

It's been a good month for the National Steinbeck Center. Fresh off an ambitious and international Steinbeck Festival, the Salinas cultural institute has now been honored with a two-year, $139,597 grant from the national Institute for Museum and Library Services.

The funds, awarded to 106 of the nearly 500 applicants from across the U.S., will help the Steinbeck Center launch an after-school arts and humanities education program for elementary school-aged children, tentatively called "Ninos del Mundo."

IMLS Director Susan Hildreth said that the awards were given to museums and learning institutions that connect people to information and ideas, fostering an engaged and educated citizenry. "These museums, small and large, will help to educate and inspire the public for years to come," she added.

No word yet on a launch date for the "Ninos del Mundo" program.
