Leon Panetta to Meet with Students in Monterey
August 22, 2011
Less than two months after taking the helm of the Department of Defense, Leon Panetta will meet with students at the Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute on Tuesday. This will be Panetta's first official visit to the schools as Secretary of Defense.
The lifelong Monterey County resident served as director of the CIA for two years before being sworn in as Secretary of Defense last month. He was in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993, and served as chief of staff to President Bill Clinton from 1994 to 1997.
During Panetta's tenure at the CIA, he helped prioritize and orchestrate the killing of Osama Bin Laden. Panetta and his wife Sylvia have made education and civic engagement for young people a priority at the CSU-Monterey Bay Panetta Institute for Public Policy, now directed by Sylvia Panetta.
He will be joined tomorrow by U.S. Representative Sam Farr (D-Carmel).
Check back for updates on Panetta's address tomorrow morning.
