Health-e-App Helps Families Apply for Health Insurance Online

A new online application tool from California's Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs will allow parents to apply for free or low-cost health coverage for their children. The tool, called the Health-e-App, is designed to ease the bureaucratic burden of applying for the Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs, particularly for low-income parents who may be juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet and struggle to find the time to seek coverage for their kids.

In addition to simplifying the application process, state officials and health advocates hope that the Health-e-App can increase enrollment in the two programs, insure some of the the state's uninsured, under-18 population (which currently numbers over a million) and foster more successful students.

"A lack of access to health care has a tremendous impact on a child’s ability to focus and learn and can often put a child farther behind," said Suzie Shupe, the executive director of California Coverage & Health Initiatives, in a statement. "We hope that families can easily apply for vital children’s health coverage using Health-e-App."
