Salinas Police Chief Announces Retirement

Salinas Police Chief Louis Fetherolf announced his retirement Wednesday morning, citing medical reasons that have kept him on leave for the past three months.
During an emotional speech at Salinas City Hall Wednesday morning, Fetherolf, who's headed up Salinas PD since April 2009, said he was leaving office Dec. 11 for medical reasons. He's been out on medical leave since September due to emergency back surgery that left him with several titanium rods and screws in his spine. City Council members signed off on a medical claim from Fetherolf at their Tuesday meeting.
Fetherolf's doctors told him he was no longer physically fit to be a police officer; Fetherolf said he had to heed their diagnosis, despite pleas from city officials to stay put.
"I cannot in good conscience attempt to carve out a special exemption for myself," Fetherolf said.
Deputy Chief Cassie McSorley will serve as acting chief while the city searches for Fetherolf's permanent replacement. City officials are also wrangling over who to hire as their new city manager. The council's split between current Seaside City Manager Ray Corpuz and their interim city manager, Jim Pia.
