Seaside Selected as 'Host City' for Amgen Tour of California
February 10, 2011
What has been called the most successful cycling road race in the United States, the Amgen Tour of California, will find itself wheeling through Monterey County during the fifth leg of the eight-day procession on May 19.
Stage five of the contest is the longest and arguably the most technically challenging of the entire race. Starting in Seaside the peloton will weave their way south through Monterey, Pacific Grove, Big Sur and ultimately turn west after making their way through Cambria. Once the riders put their backs to the sea the quaint cities and beautiful coast views they had enjoyed will give way to pure and absolute arduousness as they grind their way to the top of the coastal crest and head down into Paso Robles.
Seaside last played “host city” to the tour in 2008, being a starting point for a long and soggy coastal day that ended in San Luis Obispo after more than seven hours of racing.
