Mission Receives Earthquake-Proofing Endowment

The Hearst Foundation awarded a $70,000 grant to the Carmel Mission Foundation as a match to the $650,000 grant gifted by the Save America's Treasures program and the National Parks service.

The mission is set to undergo a multi-million dollar restoration that will span several years and look to strengthen the 214-year-old building against seismic activity. Renovation will begin in May, focusing on a roof that was last reconditioned in 1936.

The more than 150 donors of $5,000 or more will be recognized on a Memorial Wall built to honor Father Junipero Serra and his 300th birthday.
