Jane Parker's Planning Commission Nomination, Take II
February 24, 2011
Nominations to the County Planning Commission are usually routine appointments without public debate, but District 4 Supervisor Jane Parker's nomination last month departed from the norm. The board eventually blocked Parker's nominee, retired planner Janet Brennan, from being appointed on the grounds that nominees should reside within the nominating supervisor's district. (Brennan lives in Carmel, in District 5.)
On March 1, the board will have the opportunity to appoint the vacant planning commission seat when Parker nominates Seaside resident Luther Hert. Hert currently serves on the Mental Health Commission and says, "I bring a long history of community commitment and public service to Monterey County, with a sincere desire to serve the public...I can and will make decisions based on what I believe to be in the best interest of the people."
A graduate of the FBI Academy, Hert worked for the county sheriff's office for 30 years before retiring in 2003.
“Mr. Hert is a long-term resident of Seaside with experience in government administration and an interest in land use policy as it affects the community. I am confident that he will thoughtfully consider the implications of the complex decisions that come before the Commission,” Parker said in a statement.
Parker also praised Hert for his “professional, calm demeanor [which] will contribute to a respectful exchange of diverse views on land use issues.”
