Former Salinas Jaycees Treasurer Arrested for Embezzlement

Alexander Harvey turned himself in to the Salinas Police Department today and was subsequently arrested on charges of embezzling $25,000 from the Salinas Jaycees when he was the organization's treasurer.

Other members of the Jaycees, also known as the Salinas Junior Chamber of Commerce, contacted the Salinas PD on Feb. 22 to express their suspicions that Harvey had abused his access to the Jaycees' bank account and checkbook. Those suspicions were backed up by paperwork, which detectives used to track the numerous personal purchases Harvey made with Jaycees funds.

Harvey, who served as treasurer for the Jaycees from Jan.-Dec. 2010, also allegedly took $850 from another account that was traced to The Scottish Society of the Monterey Peninsula.

Investigations Sgt. Christopher Lane said his department issued a search warrant for Harvey's bank records. He also praised the Jaycees' documentation of the incidents.

"Fraud cases always take long because of paperwork issues, but this was sped along by the Jaycees' having all the paperwork together," Lane said.
