Stretch of Highway 1 "Totally Gone," Big Sur Access Blocked

A 40-foot section of Highway 1 was washed away Wednesday afternoon, just north of Bixby Bridge, where the road is "totally gone," according to a California Highway Patrol report. The road began collapsing at about 5:00 pm, and as of 9:40, was "still slipping."

Both lanes will be closed "for several days, at least," according to a CHP officer. Some Big Sur residents are hearing the coastal thoroughfare could be closed for a week or more.

CHP is advising those who need to travel between Big Sur and Monterey to connect to the 101 from Cambria.

Nobody was injured in the road collapse, where Caltrans was already on duty as the road began to give way this afternoon.
