Amgen Tour of California's Snow Scrap
May 16, 2011
Thanks to some unseasonably cold and snowy weather, the 2011 Amgen Tour of California was forced to cancel the opening stage of the race in Lake Tahoe. Race officials were also relocated the start of Stage 2 from Squaw Valley to Nevada City due to heavy snow.
"We the riders are disappointed about not racing for the fans but we all agreed it was too risky in the ever changing weather. Thank you to AEG and Medalist for supporting this decision. We all hope the fans understand,” U.S. team member Levi Leipheimer said.
Despite the rocky start, Amgen doesn’t believe the changes will cause any further delays to subsequent stages during the course of the race. Stage 5 will begin in Seaside at 9:15am on Thursday.
