Public Wary of Proposed Jacks Peak Zipline
November 23, 2011
At a Nov. 17 Monterey County Parks board meeting, commissioners heard from more than three dozen members of the public about a proposed zipline at Jacks Peak County Park.
Not one of them supported it.
The opponents are asking the county to conduct an environmental impact report before moving forward with the proposal. About half the meeting's crowd was made up of residents of senior living community Pacific Meadows (organized under the motto, "Zap the Zipline"), whose facility is within a couple thousand feet of one proposed zipline.
"Seniors have different needs than thrill seekers," Pacific Meadows Residents' Association President Carell Zaehn wrote to Planning Department Manager David Lutes. "It is not appropriate to put a thrill ride with screaming enthusiasts next to a place where people need quiet for healing and renewal."
County Parks Director John Pinio told them the contract negotiations with Canadian zipline operator Ziptrek Ecotours are ongoing. Parks staff say a zipline could bring much-needed revenue to the county park, which they consider under-utilized.
