Weekend Winds Whip Up Waves

Last weekend's rainstorms and high winds stirred up unusually large waves on local beaches Saturday and Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued a warning about large waves on Friday night. "Saturday was pretty bad," says Sherrie Collins of the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services.

But locals apparently knew to stay out of danger. The office didn't have to coordinate any public safety rescues, Collins says.

Local surfer and photographer Bryan Flores captured some of the action on the morning of Sunday, April 1. His photo from Carmel River Beach is posted above.

"21 foot swell @ 14 seconds. Carmel Beach had a 10 foot shorebreak. Carmel Point and Ghost Tree were at least 20-30 feet. Carmel River Beach had at least a 20 foot shorebreak," he writes by email. "It was massive, the ground was shaking and it sounded like a 100 trains were going by!"
