Drugs; Guns Seized on Monterey Peninsula

Local law enforcement have arrested a Salinas man who was allegedly selling a stimulant drug called Khat.

P.R.V.N.T. (Peninsula Regional Violence Narcotics Team) seized 72 pounds of Khat, a stimulant drug made from an East African shrub, and a few firearms after arresting 40-year-old Jaime Gomez of Salinas. Investigators searched both his residences in Salinas and Del Rey Oaks.

According to Seaside Police Sergeant Bruno Dias, Khat contains the chemical Cathinone, which is a schedule I drug—methamphetamine is also a schedule I drug—which makes it a controlled substance.

Dias says that while Seaside police have not seized Khat before, it has been found in Monterey County at a farm in Prunedale.
