P.G. School Bond Measure Scheduled for Recount

Measure A, a Pacific Grove ballot measure to replace and extend a parcel tax approved in 2008 to help fund public schools, won the support of an overwhelming majority of P.G. residents in November.

But the final official count shows Measure A at 66.37-percent approval—falling just 31 votes short of the 66.67-percent supermajority it needs to pass.

Around 6pm tonight, the Monterey County Elections Department announced on Facebook that in response to a request, it will manually recount the vote. The manual tally will begin Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Measure A would replace the current school bond measure, which assesses $35 per parcel and expires in June 2014, with a tax of $65 per parcel expiring in 2018. Elementary school attendance has risen by 40 percent in the last three years, and proponents argued the money was needed to fund music, art, computer and gifted curricula.
