School Trustee Redistricting Moves Forward
February 16, 2012
The seven trustee areas of the Monterey County Board of Education are about to shift slightly.
The county Committee on School District Organization has OK'd a citizen task force recommendation on redistricting the trustee areas.
"The group ultimately recommended a scenario that balanced out the population and met legal compliance, while having as little impact as possible on most of the current trustee area configurations," according to a press release.
Ron Eastwood, spokesman for the Office of the County Superintendent of Schools, describes the biggest change: Because of population group, the Trustee Area 5 line moved southward into South County, bringing the Chualar and Gonzales school districts into Trustee Area 2.
There were no major changes in Salinas or the Monterey Peninsula, he adds.
Next, the proposed redistricting goes to U.S. Department of Justice for pre-clearance. The new trustee areas should be in place in time for the November 2012 school board elections.
The current trustee area maps, adopted in 2001, are here. The proposed new maps are here.
