July 2, 2012
U.S. Navy Captain Alan Poindexter, a former NASA astronaut and current dean of students at the Naval Postgraduate School, was killed in a jet-skiing accident in Pensacola, Florida today.
According to a Reuters report the 50-year-old was riding jet skis with his two sons when the oldest of the two collided with the watercraft Poindexter and his 22-year-old son were driving.
Poindexter was pulled from the water after being thrown from the jet ski, but those on scene were not able to resuscitate him. Both of his sons escaped the collision unharmed.
Poindexter flew two shuttle missions during his time with NASA before leaving the organization to become dean of students at NPS in December 2010.
NPS declined to comment on the accident due to Navy regulations, but said a statement should be released tomorrow.
