BREAKING NEWS: Fatal Plane Crash at Salinas Airport
June 1, 2012
One person is dead following the crash of a single-engine plane on Friday morning.
A pilot was taking off from runway eight just before 11am when an unknown error occurred, causing the plane to crash near the edge of the runway. It ignited a fire, says Brett Loomis, Battalion Chief of Salinas Fire Department. Detectives from the coroner's department are determining the cause of death. The pilot's identity has yet to be released.
Firefighters responded in under a minute due to being at the airport for training and the department was assisted by Salinas Police officers. They were able to stop the fire, but the pilot had succumbed to his injuries.
There are two active runways at the airport and the one where the plane crashed is closed until further notification by the Federal Aviation Administration.
