Monterey Peninsula Water Fee Passes

Monterey Peninsula Water Management District is breathing easier now that it's secured a major piece of its future funding.
About one-third of the district’s 30,509 water users protested a proposed annual fee, MPWMD announced today, but it would have taken half to defeat it. So the fee looks like it may stick. The board met at 4:30pm today to decide whether to officially adopt the fee, reject it or pursue a compromise, but pushed a decision back to Wednesday, June 27.
The Monterey County Association of Realtors had campaigned hard to rally the 15,255 eligible protest letters needed to defeat the fee. MPWMD received 15,709 letters total, but 3,252 were deemed ineligible and 2,114 were duplicates, leaving only 10,343 legit.
Assuming the fee moves forward, the board's next step is to figure out which water-supply projects to spend it on.
