Multiple Cars Had Tires Slashed in Big Sur Over the Weekend

Some campers of Fernwood Resort were not able to leave Big Sur with their cars on Sunday after waking up to slashed tires. Music fans flocked to Big Sur for the fourth annual Hipnic concert this past weekend, bringing a larger than normal population down the coast.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, up to 10 vehicles, parked in the Fernwood lot and along Highway 1, had been vandalized sometime between 1am and 7am on Sunday.

“It has never happened before and I don’t anticipate it happening again,” says Diana Ballantyne, Fernwood’s general manager. Her husband made the report. “We just don’t have those kinds of people in Big Sur.”

Even so, MSCO commander Vince Hernandez says there will be more law enforcement presence this weekend.

“We will have a deputy make a more-detailed patrol this whole weekend as manpower permits.”
