Hartnell Board Appoints New President

With outgoing Hartnell College President Phoebe Helm retiring next month, the board of trustees Tuesday appointed Willard C. Lewallen as the next president.

“It is an honor for me to be selected as the next superintendent/president for the Hartnell Community College District,” Lewallen said in a statement. “I am joining an institution of excellence with a board of trustees that is focused on student learning, institutional quality, and effectiveness. I look forward to working with the talented and dedicated employees of the district, the board of trustees, the students, and the community in shaping the future of Hartnell College."

“Dr. Lewallen’s vast experience in budget matters, accreditation issues, and shared governance processes will be a huge benefit to Hartnell," board chair Erica Padilla-Chavez said in a statement. "His sincere, demonstrated commitment to working with the community makes him a natural fit here in the Salinas Valley.”

Lewallen has served more than 30 years in education, mostly in community colleges. He is currently president of West Hills College in Coalinga, and takes the reins at Hartnell July 1. His salary will be $225,000.00.

Lewallen earned his B.S. degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He has two masters degrees from Purdue University in exercise science and counseling/personnel services. He earned a Ph.D. in education at UCLA.
