MST Rate Hike Takes Effect Next Week
May 18, 2012
A boost in ridership wasn't enough in the end to lock in Monterey-Salinas Transit fares.
Rate increases will take effect May 26, in response to the high cost of fuel and federal funding difficulties, according to MST.
A 60-pecent increase in diesel prices last year was too much to bear, with fuel accounting for about half of MST's million-dollar budget shortfall in 2011. And Congressional dithering combined with declining ridership (by 20 percent in Salinas) through the recession added to MST's budget woes.
In the new far structure, most rides will go up by 50 cents and discount ride rates will go up by 25 cents.
