Allegiant Airlines Introduces Nonstop Flights from Honolulu to Monterey
May 30, 2012
Take a vacation. Specifically, prospective tourists, come to Monterey for vacation. That's the message the Monterey Regional Airport hopes to send when Allegiant Airlines introduces a nonstop route between Honolulu and Monterey this November.
Allegiant is offering introductory rates of $199 each way, with bookings available through Jan. 15, 2013.
"This is huge for our community," says Airport District President Mary Ann Leffel. "It shows that we can do longer range flights and support them out of here."
"Honolulu is truly a gateway to the Pacific rim," she adds. "Asian tourists who would like to come here for vacation can come from Honolulu."
Leffel hopes the weekly trips on a 223-seater will bring about 50 new tourists to Monterey a week, who might've otherwise skipped out on the Central Coast. Based on figures provided by the U.S. Tourism Association, Leffel says the economic impact equates to adding 1.4 full time jobs.
This will be the longest route out of the airport, which welcomes Alaska Airlines' first nonstop flight from San Diego on Monday.
The airport also faces Federal Aviation Administration safety requirements on its runways, requiring major construction, with a 2015 deadline.
