Sgt. Allan MacDonald, Fort Ord Cavalryman, Goes Missing; Found Safe

Marina resident Sgt. Allan MacDonald, one of the last surviving horse cavalrymen and the namesake of an equestrian trail on the former Fort Ord, was reported missing on Jan. 21.

Margaret Davis, founder of Friends of the Fort Ord Warhorse, sent out a worried email asking anyone with information to call the Marina police: "Sgt. MacDonald is 89 years old, long white hair and mustache, blue eyes, walks with a cane…He sometimes gets disoriented while driving and may be many miles from the Monterey Peninsula."

The 89-year-old was found safe the next evening near San Jose, Davis reported in a follow-up email. "He spent the night in his car on Story Road, 'by a cafe.' He's home now and talking with the Marina police," she wrote. "Thank you everyone for your instant readiness to do whatever it took. Sgt Allan MacDonald is very well loved and admired man, I hope he knows that."

The Sgt. Allan MacDonald Cavalry Trail winds through Fort Ord from the Marina Equestrian Center to the grave of MacDonald's ceremonial mare, Comanche. The burial site is marked with a picket fence and a display case.
