Pacific Repertory Theatre
Golden Bough Theatre, Monte Verde between Eighth and Ninth;
Circle Theatre, Casanova between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel
The hard-working and effective company won this category last year too, but was unfortunately and unintentionally omitted from the Best Of publication. And that was a minor tragedy, because PacRep and its artistic director, Stephen Moorer (who was mentored by Children’s Experimental Theatre founder Marcia Hovick), makes juggling productions and projects look like children’s play. That they kept those productions going through major renovations and upgrades is a testament to their ambition and smarts. In addition to a packed season of live theater, the technical upgrades mean they’re going to re-broadcast live performances on select Sundays—shows like Peter Gabriel’s New Blood, Dickens’ Great Expectations and Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. That’s savvy.
