Crown and Anchor
150 W. Franklin St., Monterey

The decor is a lush, saturated British nautical theme that feels awesome to sink into as you walk down the stairs. Expect authentic fare like curried potato wedges, corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips (of course) and bangers and mash, punctuated with daily specials and weekend prime rib. There are vegetarian, vegan and even gluten-free options. The gorgeous full bar has 20 international beers on tap, but ordering a gin and tonic will score points for its reference to England’s colonialist past. The popular patio, lined with benches and booths, abutted by the Osio Cinemas and an old adobe, loomed over by the Marriott Hotel across the street, sunken and enclosed from the tucked away plaza, is one of Monterey’s prime drinking and meeting spots. Crown, as everyone calls it, is British class done American style – fun, rollicking and unpretentious.
