There are few details known about the gun violence that has plagued Salinas this week, with two shootings out of a vehicle and three murders.
Saturday night, 42-year-old Dexter Barnett became Salinas' third homicide victim of the year.
Barnett was shot multiple times at the intersection of North Main Street and East Lake Street at about 10pm and died on the scene.
On Friday night shortly after 8pm, 43-year-old Jose Delores Salazar was shot multiple times on Holly Street off of Rider Avenue in East Salinas. He died on the scene.
According to Salinas police, three suspects dressed in black approached Salazar while he was walking near his home. One of the trio fatally shot him with a handgun. This murder is believed to be gang-related.
And several nights prior, 25-year-old Paul Morales Jr. was murdered on Wednesday at about 9pm in North Salinas on Madrid Street, off of North Main. Police responded to reports of a man down and found Morales dead from a gunshot wound. Police have no suspect information in that case.
In two other attempted murders this week, shots were fired out of a gray Mitsubishi Galant. On Friday night at about 11:30pm, a 20-year-old man driving along Sherwood Drive reported two to three shots were fired out of the suspect's car.
The man was hit once in the shoulder, and underwent surgery for a non-life-threatening injury.
On Saturday just after 10pm, another 20-year-old man was shot at while driving. He was stopped at the corner of Bermuda Way and Rider Avenue when he reported seeing the suspect car—described as a gray Mitsubishi Galant or Ford Focus, a description matching the car involved in the Friday night shooting—parked nearby.
He reported seeing flashes from the gray car as his windshield began to shatter. The victim ducked and drove away, as the suspects continued firing. He was not shot, but seven bullets hit his windshield and two hit the side of his car.
Like the previous night's shooting target, the victim is not believed to have gang ties and the motive is unknown.
Salinas police are seeking information on all five shootings. Members of the public are encouraged to report any information, and can call an anonymous tip line at 775-4222.
