Things are about to start shaking down on Fisherman's Wharf.
Actually, between the chowder rivalries, controversial sweetheart leases and major restaurant players, they always are.
But this is major.
Sabu J.R. Shake and Chris Shake, whose restaurant firm is called Restaurant Pacific Group and includes the landmark Fisherman's Grotto and a range of properties along the coast, just announced Scales Seafood and Steaks will soon occupy the space on the east side of the wharf formerly occupied by Gilbert's.
Scheduled to open spring of 2015, the restaurant presents an ambitious vision, with glass doors and "seamless" windows along the front entrance and water side of the restaurant to allow for views of Monterey Bay from as many seats as possible.
The plans for the main level include a sizeable dining room with an oyster bar and cocktail lounge.
A large upstairs room will work as a formal banquet facility with both indoor and outdoor seating, and there will be more outdoor tables on the wharf in front of the restaurant.
Its diverse design includes plans for a Scales Deli Market with salads, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts and Scales To-Go, a walk up hot food take out counter with items from the main restaurant menu.
The building renovation plans were designed by Monterey's Wald, Ruhnke and Dost Architects and the work will be completed by Dry Creek Construction of Seaside.
Construction begins this month and is optimistically expected to take five months.
