Postcards From Monterey County is a weekly, black-and-white photo feature highlighting life throughout the diverse communities of our region.

Klare Nichols uses her left hand to block the sun from her face as she makes her way up the rock face on Flumes Formation at Pinnacles National Park on July 4.

She and a handful of friends took the national holiday to go climbing, entering the park from the west side near Soledad, which is about an hour drive from her home in Monterey. Bright, warm sun cover the brown and green landscape most of the afternoon.
