Claire Gendler started out in childhood playing trombone, but today her instrument is her voice, and what an instrument it is. Her years of training as a soprano—first at UC Santa Cruz, where she earned her bachelor of music in operatic performance, and then the California Institute of the Arts studying operatic vocal performance—are evident in her performances that range from opera to R&B. Her YouTube channel (klaireg) includes a video of her delivering a powerful rendition of the “National Anthem,” displaying both skill and talent, hitting the high notes that trip up many a guest singer. She teaches voice in Oakland, and in her spare time she dances on stilts with the Daring Arts Movement. Gendler is capping off her master’s of fine arts degree from Cal Arts with a voice recital that combines her love of song with her love of movement and the visual arts at the Monterey Museum of Art’s La Mirada Cultural Center. Gendler will sing traditional and jazz/pop works, joined by collaborating artists in live movement and live visual arts, and accompanied by a pianist and two guitarists.[PM]
