Here's a fun secret about hotels you admire from the outside: You can go inside and check out the lobby, and if there's a bar or restaurant, go ahead and have a drink and make yourself feel like a guest for an hour. These private buildings are actually psuedo-public places. They are even moreso at this annual self-guided tour, created by the Carmel Heritage Society to celebrate Carmel history. This year's route stops at the Horizon Inn, Tradewinds, Candlelight, Carmel Country Inn, Pine Inn, Lobos Lodge and Cypress Inn. To pair with the seven hotels, seven local wineries and seven local restaurants serve wines and bites. It's a festive way to celebrate Carmel past and present, and for locals to get in on some of the fun parts of the city's hospitality industry. Pick up tickets at the First Murphy House on the corner of Lincoln and Sixth; there's also a hop-on shuttle available for $15 to make the route a little easier on the feet. Happy hotelling. [SR]
