This festival contracts and expands, in duration and size, year over year, like a living, breathing being. This year it’s breathing deep. San Francisco’s legendary Kronos Quartet plays live at Henry Miller Library to a documentary experience called A Thousand Thoughts (7:30pm Sat, Oct. 5). Elin Kelsey, an author and scholar on the environment, gives a free presentation on evidence-based arguments for hope at Golden Bough Theatre (7:30pm, Oct. 7). Cuban-American avant garde playwright María Irene Fornés is explored in a free film called The Rest I Make Up at CSU Monterey Bay Salinas Center for Arts and Culture (6pm, Oct. 8), and again at Golden Bough Playhouse (7:30pm, Oct. 9). The quintet Third Coast Percussion performs Glass’s Perpetulum and a world premier by Danny Elfman at Henry Miller Library, preceded by a Q&A with Glass and Elfman (7:30pm, Oct. 10). Glass’s pocket opera adaptation of Fornés’ play Drowning, and a staged reading of the late playwright’s play Mud, are performed at Circle Theatre (7:30pm and 2:30pm, Oct. 11-13). Kora master Foday Musa Suso and Glass assemble a quartet to play their own music, while the Aaron Diehl Trio does a concert of Glass’ Etudes and jazz pieces at Golden Bough Playhouse (7:30pm, Oct. 12). Deep breath.
