Her life was short and retrospectively contentious, and yet Eva Perón, aka Evita, is still beloved in her country of Argentina. Western Stage takes on the popular musical of her life that bares her name. The musical, which was spotlit by Broadway forty years ago depicts Evita's hard earned and working class life and her rise to power, winning the hearts of both her husband, President Juan Perón, and the people of Argentina. Heralded as the "spiritual leader" of Argentina, Evita died young at the age of 33 from cancer. However accurate the depiction of Evita is in her namesake musical, elements of the work—like its narration of by revolutionary Che Guevara, plus memorable songs like "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," have endeared the production to many an audience. Evening shows continue at 7:30pm Fridays and Saturday. Matinees are at 2pm Sundays. Evita performs until Dec. 7.
