Slam poets, moody musicians and charismatic comedians from the local area have flocked to this weekly open mic night (formerly the Rubber Chicken Poetry Slam) at East Village for over 15 years. All that variety in talent makes for a live show that’s never the same in the cafe’s cozy performance space. Participants who perform original poetry are scored by random audience members; the three highest-scoring performers receive a small cash prize (and perhaps more importantly, bragging rights). Beyond the hip and introspective poetry, expect to hear covers of classic rock songs to Broadway show tunes, comedians commenting on all aspects of life and strange performance art skits that must be seen to be comprehended. All the inventive art pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee or a cold beer on a weekday night.
