Since the origins of modern stage magic in the early 20th century, the conjuring arts have grown so sophisticated that performers now tend to specialize in certain genres. Among them are the mind readers, who’ll ask you a question and then predict your answer; the escapologists, like Harry Houdini, who, as their name implies, can free themselves from straight jackets and submerged metal cages; the close-up magic specialists who use perform tricks in proximity to the audience using cards and props; and stage illusionists who create long drawn out spectacles. Representatives from each of these genres have combined to create the Champions of Magic show, a British troupe that’s been touring the world and is now making a stop in Monterey. [AS]
