It can be a tough world out there for those trying to avoid meat, whether vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or – like me – just trying to avoid excessive amounts of the stuff.
Yet most restaurants are responding. And luckily, most sandwich shops in Monterey County now offer at least one meatless plate.
One such stop is Compagno’s Market and Deli. The menu lists meat after meat, so I was apprehensive the first time I asked for the lonely veggie option. That was many veggie sandwiches ago.
I opt for the giant sub bursting with sprouts, mushrooms, avocado, cucumber and bell pepper, plus the standard accoutrements. With a little mayo and mustard on the famously wide bread, it’s filling enough to make two meals. More importantly, it’s delicious.
It’s a testament to owner Bennet Compagno’s ability to deliver a great sandwich. There’s nothing particularly impressive about any of the ingredients, but together they form a mountain of crunchy, flavorful colors and textures. It’s what a sandwich should be. You won’t even miss the meat.
Pro tip: add banana peppers.
