I have always smoked blunts but I hate tobacco. I’ve seen “magars” (cannabis leaf wrap instead of the tobacco leaves used in blunts) and wondered if this would be a better alternative. I haven’t seen many brands or info on them. Would it be worth looking into making a brand of magars? - W.V.

Marijuana is a better choice than tobacco when it comes to deciding what to put inside your lungs. “Magars” (I guess that means “MArjiuana cigARS”?) are an awesome, albeit stinky and slightly wasteful way to smoke pot. A medium-sized cigar weighs about 9-10 grams. If a gram of great marijuana (and there is no earthly reason for putting shitty weed in your fancy-ass magar) goes for $15-20 retail, you are looking at $150 for one magar. So while a magar is awesome at a party or as a conversation piece, I am not sure there is a giant market. I am down to come over and smoke one with you, though. In fact, I’ll bring a “Mendocino cigar” (coldwater hash pressed and rolled into a cylinder so it smokes like a joint) and we can compare and contrast.

Does a medical marijuana recommendation allow dispensary purchases to be deducted as medical expenses for income tax purposes? - R.U.C.

Wouldn’t that be cool? Unfortunately, marijuana is still prohibited by the feds, and IRS law 280(e) prohibits people from deducting the cost of any federally prohibited substance. This law was originally aimed at cocaine traffickers, but marijuana is also a federally proscribed substance. Activists and lawmakers have been working to change this law, but progress has been incredibly slow. Sorry, dude.

My daughter is going away to college. She is smart and makes good choices. I want to talk to her about pot and stuff. Any advice? - Merry Jane’s Mom

Congrats! I’m sure your daughter knows a little bit about pot already. Make sure she knows the drug laws in the city and state where she is attending college, and that she knows her school’s policies toward drug possession. But really, I would talk to her more about the dangers of alcohol poisoning and all the pills these kids seem to be on these days. Smoking too much pot won’t kill her. Booze and pills are way more dangerous.
